August 9 at 8:30 pm EDT: Antigone in Ferguson

Tow Harlem Stage 609

Note: Different than the last two sessions we've had, instead of reading a play, we will watch a Zoom version of Antigone created to be performed in Ferguson, MO and also performed in Harlem and in Brooklyn. The production begins at 8:30pm EDT, and you need to RSVP to receive a link to the production. This is not a video of the productions done elsewhere, but rather a live reading. Theatre of War always does its productions as readings, with a few (often famous) actors behind a table -- no staging. What is interesting is the intensity that this approach creates.

Resources

Bryan Doerries, the founder of Theater of War, does his own translations and adaptations of Greek plays, but if you are interested in reading the original Sophocles version, there are many, MANY versions on Scribd. Don't read the Jean Anouilh version -- totally different play -- but any translations would be fine.

Ben Brantley did a feature for the New York Times called "A Chorus Remembers Michael Brown in 'Antigone'" that gives you a sense of the production.

Tim  Teeman at the Daily Beast also did an excellent review.

If you are intrigued by what Theater of War does, I enthusiastically encourage you to read Brian Dorries wonderful book, Theater of War: What Ancient Greek Tragedies Can Teach Us Today. (Unfortunately, it isn't available on Scribd.)

There is also a video of the production in Ferguson, which looks pretty great:
